I think I prefer the "Times of Harvey Milk" to Gus Van Sant's "Milk". It was a good movie, don't get me wrong. However, I was trying to figure out why it wasn't as powerful to me as the documentary

Havenae seen it yet, but I've always considered Van Sant's talent to be enormously overrated. To my way of thinking, he's made one or two good movies, probably by accident.
Truthfully -I hope "Milk" makes people go out and watch every documentary they can about Harvey Milk, the history of Eureka Valley / The Castro, AND the Dan White trial.
Every one of them that I've seen just adds more to story for me - no single one of them is going to capture everything.
I liked Milk because I think it focused more on the life, character and nature of Milk himself, and that story is compelling beyond all the facts of his political career. (E.g. the in the movie, when he tells a drunk Dan White that 3 of his former lovers had killed themselves ... and then his unstable young lover kills himself during the Briggs / Prop 6 campaign - it was horrible. And something I'd NEVER known).
