Jim wasn't gonna start complaining if every day of school was like this one. All he'd had to do was tell people his name, watch an awful movie and then draw a picture and he'd been good to go.
After that, he'd been free for the day so he'd taken unpacked, organized (in a chaotic kind of way) and now he was wandering around, checking things out.
A familiar face in a bedroom unfairly far away from his meant he had to stop and peek in. He was quiet for a second, trying to figure out what she was doing before speaking.
"Was there homework in class that I missed? I'm pretty sure I stayed awake the whole time."
Olive glanced up from her email (so far, a scintillating, "Hi Mom and Dad, I'm alive") and smiled over at him. "I'm not sure you can assign homework for that class," she said thoughtfully. "I mean, an essay is sort of a stretch."
"I drew a picture for my essay," Jim said proudly. It hadn't been a great picture but so what? "It illustrated the very complex emotional issues between the giant bugs and humans in that movie."
"Oooh, like a visual metaphor?" Olive asked, eyes wide. "I wrote mine on how the bugs represented man's constant existential crisis and our strife to be recognized as individuals."
...she actually had. Olive was kind of an overachiever sometimes.
