Sexism in Furry

Oct 21, 2011 10:12

There are generally three forms of sexism that exist (everywhere, not just in furry): Type_1 -blatant, Type_2 - unconscious, and Type_3 -insensitive. Type_1 is rare in this day and age, and is when someone both does and says sexist things, fully aware of the meaning behind it. Type_2 is when we do or say something sexist without realizing that it ( Read more... )

Oh yeah, as soon as they find out you might draw for them, you're "alright", or "one of the few cool girls in the fandom" (real quotes I hear). When it's not gay porn, though, you'll find less of that ;)

I don't think that the most common bridge in our society is sexual attraction; I would think, honestly, familial relations would be more common. I would like more men who feel this way to maybe think about how their mothers or sisters or aunts would feel if they came up and called them disgusting, or that their bodies are somehow repulsive to them.

I'm not the thought police, and although I wish people's MINDS and THOUGHT PROCESSES about this would change, I would at least expect it to not be encouraged in public - as it seems to be, in reference to furry (whole threads of "OMG TOO BAD THIS HAS A GIRL IN IT...ICK" and many nods, encouragements, reinforcements). I do expect people to speak up when this is encouraged, as I see it as insensitive and perhaps something that is positively reinforced by a minority.

omg i love this whole response <3 you said a lot of what i wanted to say a lot more eloquently.

and really, this debate has been going on for years. i've written about this before, others have. it's been addressed on FA, where i see a loooot a lot of "ew, boobs/girls/vag/etc" comments. but it's not going to stop, i don't think. we've been talking about changing it for far too long with no results.

Takes me back to 2005 with my rant to you, about the "boobies" thing.

When I arrived to the party, nobody yelled "The DICK is here", but when you and the few other girls arrived, suddenly the "boobies" had arrived. Same trend continues today.

Then there is that general...oddness, where many folks assume from your online presence that you are male. And this creates a strange "shield" effect for the other party looking at you. One that crumbles to pieces when they meet you at a con or any offline event ( ... )
