It's so surprisingly hilarious and then sucker-punches you when you're not looking and actually, I saw the same kind of thing in Doctor Who - looks like David and Russel are a good combination in that respect.

And intense yet funny! Yes! That's why he's perfect as the Doctor, I think (but this comes from a complete novice). He can balance out the camp quite well.
