(I'm not sure how upset you really are about this, but if you want me to stop making jokes about it, just tell me, and I apologize in advance.)
At least the gerbil was praying when she died. She's with God now. I don't think you have to refrigerate it. That might be unappetizing, anyway.
If you can keep the cat alive til tomorrow it might be less upsetting than losing two pets in one day, and B will have a chance to really say goodbye, or maybe go with you to the vet because it would be hard to be at school knowing your cats was getting put to sleep.
Oh, she was praying that her sister wouldn't eat her... and I really can't imagine what a dead gerbil will smell like... even a blonde gerbil... well, the kid has waterpolo practice, so in eight hours... will a gerbil by another name still smell as sweet, I was thinking the fridge would keep her fresher... and yes, keep the cat alive one more day, thats the plan... I put her outside for a few minutes in the sun and that seemed to remind her of younger days... when I brought her back in she was kicking up her heels, sort of... and its interesting, the tail has lost none of its swish! (she must be pissed off about dying) swish swish!
We're all anonymous in death. But maybe put it on ice. I just wouldn't want a dead gerbil in the fridge, even in a ziploc. What if it died of the plague? Maybe they're zombie gerbils, the way they eat each other. I think they don't start to smell for a day or so. Just get one of those little pine trees and hang it near the "remains." That'll take care of it.
