You have an eye for the decadent. Isn't St. Petersburg supposed to be one of the most beautiful cities in Russia? Am I remembering correctly that you had not been to St. Petersburg before?

Thank you :) I've been there more than once, and I don't actually like this city much - I perceive it as very depressing, and I think all the raptures over its beauty are exaggerated. It's a city of contrasts, where you turn around a magnificent palace and find yourself in such a dirty corner that you can't believe it's twenty first century. Russian classical writers described St. Petersburg's 'mystique' in a breathtaking way, but there doesn't seem to be much of it left. It's probably just me, though.

You should! It's not as expensive as Moscow, and there're more foreigners than Russians there :)
