For all the talk of the "evils" of government regulation, no one wants a truly unregulated economy. There are certain types of behaviors in the marketplace that go against our general view of what's fair. These numbers would be more effective if you also compared the number of games allotted during that time.

We're refusing to buy NHL merchandise until 1 year after play resumes. So if they cancel the whole season, I won't buy again until the 2014-2015 season starts.

I edited the post to add a rough estimate, in which I got that 6.9% of NHL games have been lost over the past 20 years. But due to the fact that the NHL -- as well as every other league -- has expanded during that time period, getting an exact number would mean taking the time to go back and gather data year by year. For some of those 20 years, there were less teams and hence less games, meaning that my estimates are conservative and the percentages should actually be higher.
