Tonight, I came back from Occupy Portland for a day or so, checked email, and got the great news (thanks, moominmuppet) that my hometown of Cleveland Ohio has gotten in on the Occupy America movement! There's a bunch camped out on Legislative Plaza here in Nashville too. A little to granola for the locals though and they're mostly staying away and ignoring it.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect that Nashville would be a place where this sort of thing would catch on. I came to the conclusion a while ago that any sort of revolution would have to gain traction first on the West Coast. I came to Portland on a hunch, which I didn't mention at the time I moved because I was almost too afraid to hope that my hunch might be right. But here we are.

Not that I'm discounting the action in New York and the other movements popping up in eastern cities. We owe Occupy Wall Street a debt of thanks for getting this started. But I do think that it will be the West Coast where this turns from a protest into a real movement--simply because there is so much of an activist community here already. That community has a lot of pent-up rage to go along with an amazingly sophisticated infrastructure that was ready to mobilise and deploy very fast.
