all snarking aside...

the best performers can do 2 tricks over the course of five minute and make you want to watch every single moment. just putting that out there. :)

i SO need a silks-buddy to do those improv games with! ie: three ways to climb, do the same 2 tricks, in 3 different styles, etc etc etc.. anyhow. good luck with your creative narrative! i think it's fun to work through the creative process and helpful to the final act (even if it feels difficult through it!)

oh gracious yes. and how to do that is precisely the thing i most want to learn right now, and the point of taking johnny's class, for me, and the laban movement class before that, and ( ... )

"leads to a lot of me hanging in the air feeling dumb with no idea what to do next until my arms give out and i sheepishly climb down...)"

aww.. yeah.

it helps to work with people, and not solo. people who can shout out suggestions, or ideas. people who have NOTHING TO DO with fabric, too.. who can say things like "what about a flippy-thingy?" or "i wish you would do something more stretched-out"

i say this... because i'm in the marekt for a fabric-buddy out this way, too! it's tough to find someone who has a similar schedule :)

good luck, and.. HAVE FUN! i love your zombie-fabric-act, still.. and the fact that you think of zombies on fabric, and slapstick, and pirates. i think that's really, well, FUN. run with it!

i think i'm resisting the idea mostly because i feel guilty for not already doing it! because i totally work out with a room full of other people, all the time. but, um, that isn't a good enough reason not to adopt a good idea, i realize. ;)

we did, in johnny's last class, trade our props with people who knew nothing about them to see what they decided to do with them. this was in fact completely awesome.

and, thanks! i was sad my schedule didn't work out to get out to see your recent show, alas. (i had both girls that day. i put serious thought into whether i could do it and survive.) but it sounded awesome. next time...

i will have fun with the slapstick, if nothing else. :)

I really need to see you silk. I somehow think slapstick on silks would be amazing!

the things i'm specifically worried about with slapstick are: that it may tempt me to be lazy about movement style; and that certain styles of movement are disfavored on silks not for aesthetic reasons but because they cause the fabric to rise up and eat you. i guess these concerns weigh in opposite directions and i should just try things and see how they work. :)

5.10a is supposed to be easier than 5.10. In particular, 5.10 is supposed to be somewhere between 10b and 10c. However, the grades are always somewhat subjective.

Also, note that sometimes a 5.11a will be easier than a 5.10d, because a 5.10d is supposed to be the hardest 5.10 that exists, whereas a 5.11a might just use a technique thought of as a 5.11 technique... and if you know the technique it will seem easier. Did that make sense?

oh, weird, ok. so if it just says 5.10 they're just being vague? :) i will try more of the ones labelled 5.10a, then. thanks!

Well, there are two systems (within the Yosemite Decimal System, which is what we use in the States). One is "5.10-, 5.10, 5.10+", and the other is "5.10a, 5.10b, 5.10c, 5.10d". That's why 5.10 is 5.10bc. It's not a precise science though, in any way.

But yeah, definitely try the 10a ones (before the 10b/b/d or just 10) and in addition to doing varieties of 9's.
