At the beginning of this year the Russian government insisted that Livejournal (owned by a Russian company but located in California for many years now) move its servers to Russia, where they would have to abide by Russian law. Livejournal has been extremely popular with political dissidents in Russia, so the motivations behind this move should be ( Read more... )

One thing we might consider is that while they aren't (specifically? yet?) targeting us, they may be targeting other people whether it's the LGBT community or simply people who are pro-Western values and do we really want to support that just because LJ is convenient? (TBH I may post this concept separately to my own journal because my conscience has now become involved in the decision making process.)

People must be importing their LJ to dreamwidth because the queue seems to be moving very slowly. Sadly, I really don't want to move to dreamwidth as my go-to blog but will if I have to.

Can I just say, as an "oldie"...

This isn't the first time this has happened. It's like the Olympics. It comes around every so often. There was an LJ back-up site called "Commie Journal", created in response to "OMG THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING!" back in 2006-2008...

So far, I've got three strike-out friends/comms on my list, but they've been like that for the last month.

I can understand making a backup (hello, ddos attacks or whatevs), but, I wouldn't hit the big red panic button just yet.

To quote some of my friends, (even though I plan on staying on LJ until they delete my journal for being so gay - LJ will no longer make any money from me)

“Basically, I've ignored the moral/ethical issue of primarily using LJ just about as long as I can. Honestly, the Russian government is anti-gay. What I write is mostly gay.

However, um, have we forgotten the Russians are the bad guys in this story? They may not be oppressing us personally, but they sure as shit aren't kind to the LGBT community at home and that doesn't even touch on the political crap like meddling in elections whether in the US or Europe.

Why should I give the Russians money when I should be supporting our kind of people?

And DW is basically run BY fan people FOR fan people like AO3 is.I understand a lot of the oldies have seen this and seen it all blow over, but it's more than just "them commies" for me now. I cannot in good conscience be ( ... )
