[D]oes this mean our courageous leader was never supposed to have a love interest to begin with? With this new angle, all of a sudden my love and appreciation for Taichi has increased again!

It's actually pretty awesome when you phrase it that way. Since Taichi is essentially the "lead" character, it gives me just that many more warm fuzzies to see the theme of "personal growth" (in all its different forms) pushed again to the forefront in Digimon. Romantic love is one aspect of personal growth, to be sure, but that it's shown coming to fruition quietly among side characters as opposed to _TAI EVERYTHING GET_ is rather nice. :) Too often, romantic love IS among the central quests of hero characters, and is also predictably attained.

(That said, I'm actually a Taishiro fan, but you know. I recognize that those kinds of issues (I'm not talking yaoi for lolz here) are invariably too much to ask for in these types of shows.)

I totally hear you. Shipping interests have only ever been secondary to my broader love for the series as a whole. And now, after I myself have grown up and matured in many ways, I am watching Adventure & 02 again and realizing how deeply I absolutely love every single character, even the ones that used to annoy me and/or to whom I was relatively indifferent in the past.

Sora saw Taichi as immature during Adventure too, though. ;) But the two were still best friends.

And I agree with you on Our War Game. Well, in the sense that I think it was intentional that Sora and Taichi were shown to be incompatible in a romantic sense - fighting over a hairclip . . . and Koushiro's comment to Taichi when he told him the reason of their fight: "You and Sora fight all the time!" So though I think Our War Game introduced the Taiora on a very loud scale, I also thought it refuted their relationship at the same time. Personally I thought it was well-executed.

The only thing "credible" I've read about the Kenyako relationship is on Onkei's Digital Scratch site, where the DVD footnote for the Adventure 02 Boxset said something like "it's said that Ken and Miyako got together because their voice actors got along so well".

. . . Yeah. =|

Oh man. Kenyako. Really? (Take my "faith in the show's creators" (see earlier comment) back down at least half a notch...)

That's kind of hilarious, though.

That pyramid episode seems very Taiora to me.

That came to mind for me as well, but when I reflect on it, I think even that episode would be considered one-sided (if anything). Sora was quite emotionally unavailable during that episode, and I think it was meant to show Taichi just being intense about going after a damsel in distress. Ironically, Mimi could never be that damsel - as seen in "Princess Karaoke," she finds her own way thank-you-very-much. ;) Even though Sora is a tomboy on the outside, she's really the one who requires emotional rescuing (as of course seen later with Yamato and Joe).

Not starting an argument, because I can understand why some people think that, but just for a different view:

Taichi was understandably upset about his best friend being kidnapped. Especially when it was kind of his fault.

In the same episode, just before Sora was kidnapped, Sora was shown to be scolding Taichi for being immature. People focus on the fact that Taichi was so upset about Sora being kidnapped (what best friend wouldn't be?), but the episode also showed that Sora thought Taichi was immature, ie., they're at a different place developmentally. That's not the only time Sora scolds Taichi for being immature during Adventure, either. (The other one that comes to mind is when Taichi wants to bang Koushirou's laptop to make it work, and Sora scolds him.)

Thank you for posting this. It's absolutely thrilling to see some new information in the fandom. And on a longtime hot-button topic among the most hardcore fans of the anime - who saw that coming? More than the content itself, it makes me super happy just to see such serious consideration of Digimon as a story, and from a "word-of-God" source at that. It's like -- I've sometimes had my doubts that things were planned out or considered as deeply as I would like to believe they are in Digimon (Tamers being the exception, I think). But here's one thing that certifiably was. <3

No worries, I'm glad some people liked the read and found it interesting, too. :)

Oh, I also didn't catch that you were the one who created the tumblr post~ (until I read above). Hats off for going to the trouble! It's awesome that you got the opportunity to ask about a fandom topic you're invested in, and got real answers! :D
