Time spent on homework, according to Hofferth et al (2001) has "substantial variation by age": as children get older, they tend to have greater workloads. Girls read for less time, or fewer pages? Given that learning disabilities are more prevalent in boys, I could easily imagine girls spend less time reading, but do more of it.

I feel like I should have more opinions on this -- education!! -- but I teach in an all-boys school, so it's kind of hard to do gender comparisons ;).

it didn't say anything about reading speed or comprehension. I was just looking at time use studies today.
