Differences in effect of Height

May 10, 2007 10:33

While the effects of physical height on job success for men are well documented, it has been suggested that women would have a ceiling effect on height benefit, being negatively judged as too tall. However, Judge and Cable (2004) found that physical height was related to financial success for both men and women. Effects appeared to be slightly ( Read more... )

It's easily determined from the chart. Go to the women's chart and look at the 45-50%ile for 30 year olds. ;)

Being short means I don't have to duck for doorways. :) It is a little amusing when my officemate stands next to me though, she's really tall for a woman and I'm really short.

FWIW, I tend to be attracted to short people (of all genders). Tall people catch my eye too, sometimes, but that’s mostly a function of noticing the unusual. You’re about my favourite size in a man.

I’m a smidge short for a man myself (25th percentile, about, per that chart), and I didn’t realize that at all until fairly recently. In retrospect I suppose I’d like to have the social advantages that being tall would have given me, but ideally I’d like to have them without, y’know, being tall. :-)

I am of, apparently, 25th %ile height (ouch). But I had all of this height when I was 12, so I have the self-image of a fairly tall person. And, for reasons that totally escape me, people tend to parse me as two inches or so taller than I actually am (ie the height I always wanted to be). I don't know if it's that I act like a tall person due to my growth pattern, or if I have other qualities associated with height (like being competent ( ... )

I'm tall and I like my height, but I haven't historically had very high self-esteem. Actually, in the circle of people I have interacted with, I've noticed that shorter women generally appeared to have more confidence than taller women (despite often complaining that they wished they were taller).

I'm not sure if this extends beyond my circle of acquaintences, but I also meet a lot of tall women who worry about being taller than men they date, so that could play into things.
