Mate selection differences

There are several theories to explain the differences men and women have in selecting a mate. Epstein and Guttman (1984) reviewed 3 types of these: sociobiological, sociological, and psychological. I saw a talk this last valentine's day (C was in Boston; we don't celebrate anyway) on some guy's psych research which showed a correlation in what features women found attractive over the course of their montly cycle. There's a big spike in "manly men" right around ovulation, but only if the women aren't looking for long-term relationships.

Unfortunately I have no idea who the guy was.

There was also an interesting paper (Woodward and Richards, 2005) on the difference between "dating" and "one-night stand" preferences in males, which I think may end up being the cornerstone of a future post.
