I have some family that's really into this. Girls ages 8-13 or something like that. Which of these, if any, would be appropriate for that age range do you think? All three girls are into it big time and I thought maybe you could open them up to manga not so mainstream yet still age appropriate. Any suggestions?

Hmm, if they're that young, you should probably stick to what's called either shojo or shounen manga. "Shojo" means girls' manga, and is usually okay for younger kids, and anything labeled "Shounen" is boys' manga, which is almost always sports-centered but generally also free of adult themes.

Avoid anything you see categorized as "-ai," like "shounen-ai," because the "-ai" is an abbreviation of 'renai,' the Japanese word for love. Most manga that are categorized as love or romantic are not going to be appropriate for that age group. And whatever you do don't get them yaoi, yuri, or hentai.

If you're looking to buy something in the way of presents, everybody seems to like Fruits Basket, on the down side if they're into manga at all they probably already have that. Marmalade Boy is a classic they might not have, and it's completed already.

Besides that, xxxHolic would probably be fine, it's not complete yet, and it's a little darker than most shojo, but mostly in the sense that it's plots tend to follow a guy who can see ( ... )

Shore thang!

Eyeshield 21 A great high school football manga set in Japan. Interesting and quirky characters, funny with smoothly incorporated twists of real-life problems. The volumes are well-sized, but they read quick because of the football tournament structure. Therefore, be prepared for fantastic mid-game cliffhangers, yo.

Beauty Pop The manga centers on a high school girl named Kiri Koshiba who has an innate gift for hairstyling. The story follows her life and her problems with the school's makeover team, the Scissors Project, who at first feels threatened by her talent, but then struggles to get her to join them. It's really much better than I described, LOL. Kiri may be gifted, but she's completely apathetic about it, with no ambition whatever. This drives Narumi, the head of the Scissors Project, nuts because he's aflame with wanting to top the industry. Characters conflicts are interesting. I love Kiri's nonchalance. Plus, the art style is nice--very poppy and fitting.
