HUB7 - Daniele Favilli (Angelo Colasanto in TW "Miracle Day")

Dec 02, 2011 22:45

I just remembered a few bits and pieces of the things Daniele told us on stage, and wrote them down before I forget them again. They are in no particular order.

Daniele was asked how much he actually has seen of "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood". He never has seen any of the Doctor but promised when he gets home he will start, and at least he recognized the TARDIS on my t-shirt when I walked over to him to get my photo shot. But he did watch the early Torchwood episodes because a friend had said that it was good. That was before he had gotten the role. But after he had the role, he stopped watching because he wanted Angelo to have this naive approach to Jack, he did not want to know too much about him, he wanted Jack to be mysterious to him. After the shooting had ended, he watched it all till "Children of Earth" and he liked this very much.

He also told us about the week when he got the role. Actually after he had done the first audition he was on vacation in San Francisco but his agent said he should come back to LA for the next audition and reluctantly he went. He got the role on Wednesday, on Thursday there was costume fitting (not much to do there as he only had boxer shorts in the bed scene ;) )and on Friday they already filmed. And when he woke up on Friday morning and was in the shower, he wiped away the fog on his mirror and went "I'm so fired" because that was when he detected the burst blood vessel in his eye. But to his surprise everyone on the set liked it and they even wrote it into to the script, that Jack recognizes the old Angelo by this. I always had wondered about this, and now I got the answer: Originally he should have recognized him from scars on his hand. It also was John Barrowman's idea to have it in the conversation in bed "what happened to your eye".

Which just reminds me that John talked at length about the shorts they wore in the bedroom scenes and how he used his experience to let them especially made, as the shorts they first should wear would have made their bums look like hanging down so he requested those fitting shorts so it wouldn't look completely weird. I did not understand all the technical details of what exactly was different, but I'm sure millions of women all over the world appreciate his efforts ;)
I must apologize, I told something wrong there with the boxer shorts. Someone explained it to me in German, I misunderstood some words. JB did indeed have something specially made, but it was for the front of the male anatomy, not for the backside! It is for scenes when they are naked, but regulations allow them not to be real naked and flesh touching, even if you don't see it on camera. So they have things (jockstraps) to hide their... things. But the thing they usually use has straps which you can see from behind, so John let them make something that can be attached with tape, so it would look as if he was really naked. Or something like that, someone whose first language is English surely could explain it better than me!

Daniele also spoke a lot about theatre, he loves the theatre and someone asked if he thinks that Shakespeare loses when being translated into Italian for example. He agreed and said that Shakespeare chose every word exactly so it would make an impression, for example "To be or not to be" which are a lot of hard letters, when you translate this into Italian, it sounds much softer and has not the same impact.

In the group panel everyone got asked for one tip for people who want to become actors and Daniele simply said: "Love it". Because if you love it then you will do everything to work as an actor, even do other jobs till you get the right chance. It's the same like John Barrowman says - "if you want to become famous, go to X-Factor. The stage is for people who really want to act. Sometimes fame comes with it, but it's not the point."

When they all were asked about the worst lie they ever told Daniele said that he once told his teacher he had run over his dog and killed it (just because he hadn't done his homework).

At the panel together with John Barrowman he got asked of course how it was to play THE scene with him in "Miracle Day". At first Daniele did not understand which scene was meant and John teased him: "The one where we were running down the street of course!" LOL
Daniele repeated what he had said the day before already - that John made him comfortable and so it all was very relaxed.

I think there was a bit of unfair snickering from people in the audience when he twice said "If you play with John..." because it was clear that it was meant in a different way and poor Daniele did not quite get why people were laughing, instead he was really passionate talking about working with John, and it was this passion that had blown me away in his role, when Angelo talked about how it was living in a small Italian village as a gay man.

His favourite Shakespeare play is "MacBeth", he once played in a modern Italian version where they all were naked because they were Maori. His next project will be a Western, and he also once played in a Rock band. I hope we will get Torchwood the musical one day ;)

Everyone also had to say his favourite James Bond villain and if I remember correctly Daniele's was Goldfinger. I admit I don't know many classic James Bond villains but Goldfinger of course because he was played by a German.
