I was only going to write a short piece for this, but the idea got away from me a bit. this could probably do with judicious editing, but I'm not in the mood to do that, so you get it uncut.
It's interesting, before the divorce, she was eminently hateable. She was a slovenly cow who cared only about herself and what she wanted. But now that the divorce is through and she's fallen so far, it's kind of sad. She really could have had it all if she hadn't of been so .. stupid about it all.
I think one of the reasons it is so easy to hate Marielle in the legacy before her divorce, is because of the effect she had on the family. They are characters that, hopefully, you all care about, and so seeing them so miserable because of the selfish actions of one woman, made you hate that woman
( ... )
Thank you. :D The one-dimensional comment about her still rankles, so I always smile when someone says she is complex, because that is what I've been going for all along.
Yup, she has no one else to blame for how things turned out. she could have made it work, if she had been less self absorbed and willing to actually become part of the family.
That was really fun to read. I kinda prefer the old Marielle - not the lady; we all know what she's like, don't we? I don't know, maybe because it's harder to see her like that when she's got her old accent and everything. I'm not good at explaining things, and it's late xP But a good read.
And how weird is it that you have posted this whilest I've been watching a few episodes of Desperate Romantics on the iPlayer? Have you seen D.E before? Victorian times obviously and it's based on the actual lives of the Pre-Raphealite Brotherhood.
Sorry, I'm going on a bit now xP I shouldn't comment this late.
Young Marielle is certainly fun to write, I'll give you that. I think as well that she has so much potential there, it's nice to think that maybe she will make different choices and end up as a different person. That won't happen, but it's nice to play what if?
I meant to start watching Desperate Romantics, but forgot it was on. Millais is one of my favourite artists, and his Ophelia has captured my imagination like no other painting. It's just astonishingly gorgeous, even though it;s not a happy subject matter and I know how it ruined the health of Elizabeth Siddal.
My parents were in Amsterdam last year and managed to go to the Millais exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum. I was insanely jealous when Mum told me that Ophelia was there and that pictures do not so it justice.
Aww thank you. I wouldn't go that far, but I'm glad you liked it.
*nods* The potential in the young Marielle is enormous, and it is how she chose to use that, that determined what happened in her life. The what if? game is fun to play with her.

I really must go to the Tate one day and see it.

With this you've added more dimension to Marielle's character, she had potential, like Eliza in "My Fair Lady," but instead she threw it all away.
