This evening after work I walked to the bus stop in the pouring rain, and a man said "hiya" to me. So I said "hello" back. For the context of the story, I should explain that the man's behaviour and mannerisms are noticeably odd, but non-threatening - and yes, this is directly relevant. Other people arrive at the bus stop, and the man says "hiya"

(1) I think the most disconcerting part of this story is that I knew how it would unfold right from the second line. That these things are not even remotely surprising.
(2) Due to ToDD, I'm basically just cooped up in an office or the library or the flat, wrestling books (see 3), but in combination with (1), this is adding to the general sense of 'what are we getting ourselves into'.
(3) See profile pic - in total panic, I turned to rereading YA fiction at night, bcs with most other books I cannot even follow the plot any more, as I will start skimming for ToDD-relevant information.
(4) Take the car; driving practice is v important at the beginning. Maybe plan a few weekend trips outside the city.
