I disappeared off into the wilderness for most of last week for Hippy Tree-Planting Camp. It was fantastic. Look, there are even some pictures that one of the other people on the trip took (they're worth a look for the amazing scenery shots, but every picture I'm in makes me look like Gollum). We planted about 1500 trees in two days, dismantled ( Read more... )

There's no all-purpose way of telling which mushrooms are safe to eat, and anyone who claims otherwise is dangerously misinformed - you have to learn how to recognise individual species, and the signs that differentiate one small brown/beige/whatever fungus from another. However, chanterelles (the kind that we found) are a good place to start because they are very distinctive, and the only other type that looks remotely like it is the false chanterelle, which are also safe to eat but don't taste very nice. Other than that, you need to really know your stuff because some of the poisonous ones can cause you serious long-term damage.

Oh, that sounds wonderful! It makes me think of our volunteering holiday in France. I'd love to do something like that again. Maybe next summer?

France was great, but it'll take a really special project to tempt me back to BTCV because TFL is so much better. If you want to go along but don't fancy being on your own then let me know and we might be able to co-ordinate schedules, although they only go out in the spring and autumn because summer is not good tree-planting weather, and accommodation is really expensive.
