Frank did a mental victory dance and retrieved a huge sack of jelly beans from the clerk. He practically skipped out to the car, where his mortified wife and oblivious daughter were waiting for him.
"Honestly. Do we have to stop here every time we pass?" Leslie demanded. "You don’t exist on jelly beans."
He popped one into his mouth and savored it. "They remind me of you."
She took a swing at him and the car swerved dangerously close to the edge of the road.
"Easy, baby."
"Honestly. They’re like your drug of choice, or something."
Little Karolina piped up from the back seat. "Does Daddy need a rehab? Because Annie said her mommy was a-addicted to jugs and had to get a rehab. What’s a rehab?"
Leslie snickered. "Rehab is the place you go when you’re addicted to something bad for you. So maybe Daddy does need rehab. For jelly beans."
"Are you kidding?" Frank demanded "I do not need rehab. And you can’t get addicted to jelly beans. I just like them."
"A lot."
"Your point?"
"Addict."
He scowled at the road for a long minute. Then:
"Well, if I’m an addict, you are, too," he crowed.
"And what am I addicted to?" she demanded.
Frank parked the car and leaned over so that he was right under her nose. "Me."
