003: Loss
He came over and found her crying on the floor, peering under a heavy bookshelf. Geoffrey knelt beside her and touched her arm. She jumped.
"Hey," he said. "What’s up?"
She sat up and brushed her tears away. "My keys are under there. I can’t get them out and I missed work today."
Geoffrey put an arm around her shoulders and squeezed. She leaned on him, cried a little more.
"Hey. Don’t worry. I’ll get ‘em for you," he volunteered.
She scooted over and gave him room. He leaned down and assessed the situation.
The keys were up against the wall. The gap between the book case and the floor was too small for his hand. The only alternative was to move the whole thing out and back again once the keys were retrieved.
"Stand back, baby," he warned.
She got out of the way as quickly as she could. He grabbed the book case-a hand on the back and one under a shelf-and lifted, turning it out as much as he could. He set it down again.
"Damn, this thing’s heavy," he complained.
"Do you want me to move some books?" Catharine asked.
"Nah. Just your anvil set."
She laughed. He moved the case out a little further. This time, when he set it down, he could see the glimmer of the keychain. One last hoist and it was far enough away from the wall that he could get them.
"Cathy, pass me an umbrella." She tossed him one. "Thanks."
It took a moment to fish the keys out. He picked them up. Handed both keys and umbrella to her. Proceeded to move the book case back to its original position.
She smiled radiantly at him.
"Thanks."
He waved a hand. "Don’t worry about it. Why don’t you sit down and I’ll take care of dinner."
She blushed and grinned and went to curl up on the couch. Geoffrey reached for the takeout menu by the phone.
