021: Confidence

Dale adjusted himself before remembering Stacey was in the room and snatching his hand back. "Sorry," he said. Was relieved when she giggled. He turned around to collect his composure from the floor, then turned back, sudden, quick.

"Stacey."

"Yes?"

"Can I tell you a secret?"

She propped herself up on her pillow. "Fire, Captain."

His expression was unreadable and he thought for a moment. "Stacey, I’m in love with someone."

She frowned. "Oh?"

"I know. I should have told you sooner. But I was just too scared."

All her insecurities came rushing back. She pulled the blanket up over her chest and waited, terrified.

"Stacey. Don’t look like that."

She was going to yell at him. Had every intention. But her voice failed on her and she curled her tongue in her mouth instead.

I’ll bet she’s tall. "Who?"

He sighed and turned to the dresser. Pulled a drawer open. Stacey felt like a fool. Some woman he had a picture of in their room and she hadn’t even noticed. He hid it behind himself and her mind darted straight to his ex.

"I want to ask her to marry me."

Stacey sighed. "I suppose that explains your preoccupation of late."

"Stacey, do you think she will?"

"I don’t know."

He sat down on the edge of the bed and dropped the thing in his hand onto her lap.

"Do you think this will help you make up your mind?"

She gaped at him. He watched her. It was forever before she gave him an answer.
