Summary: Victor mulls over his son.
Victor sighed and adjusted the pictures on his desk one last time. Or, at least, he pretended to. All he was doing was looking at them, and he knew it.
It’s hard to lie to yourself.
One of Chase, age five, with his favorite teddy bear. One of Janet holding him as a baby. One of him at age ten, looking surly. One at fourteen, glaring. The most recent at seventeen, apathetic. The latest family portrait.
He couldn’t deny he had regrets. He certainly couldn’t deny that he had, in large part, pushed Chase to run away this time and every other.
Sullen blue eyes glared up at him. He snapped all of the pictures facedown and pressed his eyes to the palms of his hands.
Normally, he’d go to Janet, but she was off in her own world.
He shuffled a few miscellaneous objects around on the desk and mulled over the present situation. Then he picked up the phone and called the LAPD for the fifth time in as many hours, wondering if they’d have an answer for him this time.
