Summary: Chase has made a C in English.

Victor shifted quietly on the couch, not wanting to wake his wife. She groaned and nestled against him, coiled one hand around his and rested the other on his thigh. He sighed. He’d been trying to use that hand.

Chase glared at him from across the room.

"What?"

"Nothin’."

Victor sighed and rolled his eyes.

His son leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed. He was reminded forcibly that he was trotting down the inevitable path to Old, and Chase was a kid.

Janet was a kid, compared to him, as well, though.

"What is it this time?" Chase’s glare gave him the distinct impression that he was the source of the boy’s anger.

"I made a C in English. Watch me not care."

Victor rubbed a temple. "You know, my father used to beat me senseless when I gave him that attitude."

"That a threat?"

"It is a statement of fact."

They glared at each other. Janet’s hand twitched on his leg.

"Go do your damned homework before you wake your mother."

Chase bristled. "What if I don’t?"

"Then fifteen years of forcing yourself against my will are going to seem like nothing."

They glowered at each other. Janet squeezed his thigh.

Chase almost asked why, almost demanded to know a thousand things. His mother opened an eye and smiled at him, ‘waking up.’ Victor backed off a little.

"Hi, Chase. How was school?"

"Fine. The usual. Whatever."

Chase stalked off toward the stairs.

"Victor…"

He looked away from her, not wanting to hear what she was about to say. He knew it by heart. And the worst part was that, somewhere deep down, he knew she was right.
