"Huh?"
Two sets of eyes locked on Kate.
"I think I’m pregnant," she said, fiddling with her bracelet.
There was a pause that existed as only a pause could exist. It did not exist as an action, or a thing. It was as if the universe had skipped a beat.
"And…?" Billy prompted.
"It’s, well, if I am, it’s Eli’s."
"Have you told him yet?" Teddy asked.
"No."
"Have you told your father yet?" Billy asked.
"No."
Billy and Teddy locked eyes for a moment. Kate put her head down on the table.
"Okay, first, you stop letting your father tell you who to see. Eli’s way better than the latest asshole," Teddy said. "And I’m not the least bit biased on that."
"And ruin every standing my family has?"
They gave her a look.
"First," Billy said, "when have you ever cared?"
She sighed.
"Second," he continued, "he hit you."
"I hit him back. The world is bigger than just me."
"Yeah. And now Eli’s world is just a tad bigger, whether he knows there was a shift in the cosmos or not," Teddy pointed out.
Kate sighed. "Yeah. I know." She stood up. "I should probably go find out if it is, and then go tell him."
"You do that."
They managed to hold back until she got out of the room before they started cackling like hens.
It was Billy who spoke the question that was on their minds:
"Do you think she’d let us god-parent?"
