Summary: Catherine finds a stray.
055: Poor
Catherine was about to get on the bus when something caught her eye. Some movement in the side street to her right. She backed away from the steps and headed into the alley.
Two boys had a stray cat cornered against a wall. She mentally reviewed her apartment’s pet policy, and grabbed the nearest boy by the shoulder.
He dropped something-she wasn’t sure if it was a bag of marbles or a rock. He screamed. His friend took off and left him in her clutches.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” she roared.
The boy cowered. She held his arm up to keep him from moving too much. He echoed her words and she threw him in the general direction of his friend.
“Get the hell out of here! You’re lucky this time!” she snapped. “Don’t count on it next time!”
He ran off. The cat gaped up at her and mewled.
“Hey, kitty,” she said gently, crouching down and holding out a hand.
It mewled again. She wondered if she had any of her lunch left over. Reached into her purse and pulled out part of a ham sandwich. The cat pawed at the bag and she pulled the corner of the meat out.
She didn’t even have a chance to hold it out to the cat. It snatched it from her hand and retreated several feet to devour its morsel.
“Here, kitty. I’ve got more,” she cooed.
The cat purred and hobbled back to her. She picked it up and dug around for some change for the pay phone. Geoffrey wasn’t going to like this.
Oh, well, she thought. It was her apartment. He’d learn to live with it.
