035: Deception

Geoffrey came home to a most unwelcome surprise.

His mother sat in front of the door, suitcase beside her. She was obviously waiting for him, and she apparently intended to stay.

This was not an idea he liked, nor was it one he was expecting to encounter today of all days. He thought about telling her to go get a room, but she was his mother. He couldn’t just do that.

Ann Formerly Wilder jumped to her feet and threw her arms around her son. She chattered for a moment before releasing him, and followed him into his apartment. He didn’t stop her, but he made it quite clear that he didn’t particularly want her there.

“What has got you in such a mood?” Ann demanded.

“Nothing.”

She had followed him into his bedroom and was watching him sift through his clothes, trying to find something to wear for his date with Catherine.

“Do you have plans?” she asked.

“Yes.”

Ann frowned and looked up at her son when he turned around. He sighed and tossed slacks and dress shirt on the bed.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” he said, trying to make peace before he needed to.

“It’s quite all right. I did just show up on you, didn’t I?”

Yeah. “It’s okay, Mom. You can have the bed.”

She studied him. He repressed a squirm and let her. “You were planning on bringing some girl back here, weren’t you?” she accused.

“Yes.” He wasn’t going to lie to her. And maybe it would prompt her to go to a hotel.

“Geoffrey, women will just get you in trouble,” she informed him. “Except me, of course.”

“Of course.”

She turned and took a look at his clothes on the bed.

“Well, it can just be an opportunity for this girl to meet your mother!” she declared, far too brightly.

Geoffrey groaned inwardly. “I don’t know, Mom. You must be tired from your trip.”

“No, no!” she cried. “I just can’t wait to meet your little girlfriend!”

He sighed and didn’t bother to correct her. It wouldn’t do any good. So much for a nice night with Cathy, he thought. “That’s great, Mom.”
