Summary: Geoffrey's heard from his mother again.
031: Lake
He stared out at the ocean a little wistfully. She leaned on his shoulder and made a quizzical noise.
“Everything all right?” Catharine asked.
“Yeah. Mom called again.”
“Uh-huh?”
He sighed and tried to think of a way to tell her that his mother wanted him to move into the old house. He couldn’t, so he instead tried to avoid the subject.
“Nothing big. She got someone else to witness,” he said. “She’s moving.”
“Didn’t she get the lake house?”
“Yeah, but she doesn’t want to stay there. Says it ties her down.”
Catharine sat up and studied him. He didn’t break eye contact with the Pacific. She reached up and pulled on a curl. He winced and removed her hand from his hair.
“Easy, baby.”
“What’s she going to do with the place?” Catharine asked. He was hiding something. She knew it. He knew she knew it. Eventually, she’d have it out of him, whether he liked it or not.
“I don’t know,” he mumbled evasively.
“She doesn’t expect you to do something with it, does she?”
“…Maybe.”
“Geoffrey, she lives seven states away,” Catharine pointed out. “She can’t just expect you to uproot yourself for her benefit.”
Geoffrey snorted. “Sure she can. She’s my mother.”
“Are you going to do it?”
“Probably not.”
“Probably?”
“Depends on a few things.”
She let out a monumental sigh. “You are impossible,” she said, and left it at that, because she knew she wouldn’t get anything else out of him.
