The neighbors didn’t think much of it when they didn’t come home. It was generally assumed that Mr. and Mrs. Yorkes, and their neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Stein, had decided to spend a night or two away from the places that reminded them of their children.
When they didn’t come home for days, then weeks, though, someone thought to call the authorities.
There was no conclusion to reach. No evidence. No bodies. The police couldn’t even get into the houses. There was no back entrance that was not well-guarded. Even the Steins’ shed had been given better security.
Things that should have happened failed to.
No one came to check the mail. Mr. Stein’s garden went to dust. Mrs. Stein didn’t lay on the grass and draw. Mr. Yorkes didn’t come to the front door to fetch the paper, and Mrs. Yorkes didn’t meet him on his way back in with coffee.
Someone from the postal service collected their mail. One of the neighbors removed the newspapers in front of the doors. Life went on.
No one asked. No one told. No one assumed.
