She held him. Didn’t say a word. Dale cried on her chest and clung to her like she was the only thing anchoring him to the planet. And he cried.
The news had come down an hour ago that his mother was dead.
He’d been crying ever since.
Stacey shivered and thought of her own mother and held him until she couldn’t hold him anymore. Until he was out of tears to cry and pain to feel.
Dale sat up straight. Wiped his eyes and held her hand. "Don’t leave me," he breathed. She almost didn’t hear.
"Don’t worry," she assured him. "I won’t."
