Hm. I'm all for chilling. When I was in Thailand (Phuket and Krabi), I could have gotten certified, but I didn't want to waste a day in a pool. Instead, I went on a snorkeling day trip, and around Krabi, a jungle and temple tour - and had a blast.

I've got temple tours and other tourism on other days, in and around Bangkok...but Ko Chang is a little isolated. Plus I'll have a lot of chill time when I get home until I find a job! But I'm inclined to agree with you.

as a certified diver... I'd say do the one dive.
You might get 3 dives in on the three days, but frankly I don't think it's terribly worth it.
Do one good dive and save the cash for another day.

Thanks Ry! If it were really cheap, I might have been inclined to try...but the rates aren't great, and I'd probably see more of the pool than the ocean, wouldn't I?
