scary low...

I woke up this morning for no particular reason, when the realisation settled over me that I didn't feel right. My insulin just got changed to a higher bedtime N dose (25 units) so I checked my sugars, and my reading was 50! I kinda freaked a little, and took 4 of my glucose tablets (16gm carbs) my husband wanted me to eat something a little more ( Read more... )

diet, hypoglycemia

Good question. As far as a proper snack, I think that's pretty well debatable, too.

A dietitian at the diabetes center here told me last time I was there that a good bedtime-ish snack might be something like some string cheese and an apple. She said, "That's a good combination of protein and carbs."

So, all that to basically say, I dunno.

I often eat crackers and cheese for a bedtime snack. If you don't think you can eat anything substantial before going to bed, reduce your dose of NPH by a few units and see if that brings the blood sugar up a bit. What other insulin do you take besides NPH?

I've managed about 16...(or 0.8 on my suagr tester)... reggitsti January 29 2004, 14:38:13 UTC
...after a nights sleep and didn't feel a thing when I woke (I was really tired), which was really a bit scary and I still don't know if it was just the meter being odd. My normal snack is a sandwich, but on this occasion (first day from getting back after my uni holiday) I accidently made it with 'healthy' bread which turned out to have half the carbs of normal bread...not a mistake I've repeated :/

I dont know about anyone else but I need complex carbs as my bedtime snack - simple carbs tend to wear out in the middle of the night.

I usually have 2 pieces of toasted bread with margarine or butter. Its not as heavy as a sandwich but still complexy.

Cereal is good too or a small amount of pasta.

Its pretty subjective though.
