Low blood sugars

Jan 29, 2004 14:32

I have been having a problem lately with my blood sugars dropping to 3,2. Now normally I would have waring that they are getting low (strange but my nose gets icey cold just before) But now nothing they seem to just hit me rather harshly with sweating and shaking and not being able to understand. It takes forever for my sugars to go back up and ( Read more... )

Lows are always a pain, the inabilty to detect them was something that happenned to me as I got older, I found though it was just that the symptoms were more variable

I'm sooo sorry you are having problems. I know that people do loose their warning signs sometimes.

I don't know if this is true, but I was told once that a way to try and get them back is to run a bit high for a while, then you start to feel hypo at a higher blood suger than usual. (this bit is true becuase when i was younger i had a real problem whole i was ill where i jsut couldn't keep my sugars down, i started to feel hypo at about 4.5 mmol/l!!) Anyway, sometimes this can bring your warning signs back.

Don't know what anyone else thinks about the theory? Obviously its bad to go high for a long period, but if its just a temp thing until your warning symptoms come back i think i'd do it. No warning is a nightmare.

I completely agree. I've had this issue a few times when my control hasn't been so good.

Although, it may depend on the person I seem to be super sensitive and just a couple high numbers will trigger my body to recognize it's lows again.

It is a trade off but I'm can't handle not recognizing my lows it scares me far too much.

Best of luck.

It seems to be that the longer a person has diabetes, the less they feel when they go hypo. Have you reduced your insulin dosage to try to ward off the lows? Does it help?

You have my sympathy. Once in awhile I have a day when I'm low all the time, no matter what I do. It gets annoying after about the second or third low in one day!

My low warning signs suddenly changed from giving me a reasonable amount of time to do something to kind of snap change - much like how you describe.

I'm 29 and have been type 1 for less than 2 years btw.

Have you thought about trying one of the arm testers ? I use the OneTouch Ultra asnd as someone who types 8 hours a day for a living its a god send.

Losing "warning signs" goes with being diabetic for a long time. I've had it for nearly 20yrs, and over the last couple of years the "signs" have been few. Doc said that this is normal. However, this has rectified itself the last few months - I'm pregnant!!! I'm having a ridiculous number of lows (sometimes 4-5 a day), but I'm getting signs. Its kind of drastic, and I don't know if anybody else has experienced this with pregnancy.
