I'm sorry diabetes!

But I needed juice today. I've only had juice once in the past 3 months because of the sugar content, but I craved it so bad today and gave in. So yeah, I had a yummy cold glass full of Apple and Pineapple juice...probably the worse type of all! hehe I never really saw juice as a 'junk food' until my diagnosis and it was a struggle to stop ( Read more... )

The juice probably tasted sweeter because you haven't had it in three months. If you used to drink it a lot, you probably didn't notice the sweetness. Now that you don't drink it, it suddenly tastes very sweet when you do treat yourself.

Juice is not junk food, as long as it's 100% juice and not the 'juice drink' or 'cocktail' kind which are loaded with high fructose corn syrup and other kinds of garbage. Cranberry and grape juice are loaded with antioxidants and other goodies. I'm sorry but it irritates me when people freak out about juice. It's not bad as long as you're smart about it; don't beat yourself up over it.

As for the taste thing, that happened to me with chocolate--after I was diagnosed I started eating dark chocolate, then one day had a piece of milk chocolate and it was way too sweet!

Really, any food is OK as long as you're smart about it (know what you're getting into with it and plan for it).

I don't drink juice, because it isn't worth the carbs to me. To someone who loves juice it might be worth the carbs.

This may sound strange, but has anyone had any major taste changes since their diagnosis?

It's just what you're used to, not anything directly diabetes-related. You've been avoiding anything particularly sweet, so now you notice the sweetness more strongly.

I was diagnosed (type 1) when I showed up in the ER with DKA and they kept me in the hospital (and eating hospital food) for a week and a half, which was long enough that, when I got home, I had lost my taste for 2% milk and my favorite brands of sausage tasted unbearably salty as well. (Since then, I've reacclimated to the sausages, but I'm still on 1% milk...)

I think that the reasin juice tastes so sweet now is that you haven't had any in a while.

Personally, I've never been a juice drinker. It was too expensive to ahve very often when I was a kid and as I got older I came to see it as empty calories. If you're really craving the taste of apple, it would be better just to eat the 15 carb (approx.) apple than down the (30 carbs for 8 oz.) juice, but you probably know that :)
