This place, Cameron had been rapidly discovering, was very different from California even though it too had a beach. She was there now, running her fingers absently through the sand. Today she was drawing Japanese characters and routinely erasing them when she grew tired of them ( Read more... )

He hadn't been to the ocean yet. He'd simply read about it, heard from the others, and talked to Dan about the differences between this sea and the one he'd never gotten to sail. That said, he was a little surprised to see someone dipping their feet into the wet sand and he almost cried out as the tide started coming in before holding it back.

He breathed out. He would be doing the same soon enough; he'd have to settle to the thought that the ocean here wasn't made of vinegar and wouldn't burn his skin.

She glanced up from her spot on the sand at the young man, but paused - no, not a young man. What was a better term for it, she wondered? Creature, perhaps.

Cameron wasn't about to move from her spot, though, as he didn't read as a threat just now... so she waited until he was close enough to hear and then said, clearly, "Hello."

"Hello, miss."

He hadn't met her yet, after all, but he could be polite. He bowed his head, forgot he wasn't wearing a hat, and gave a small smile.

"You're the new one that Dan told me about, aye?"

"I wouldn't know. What did he tell you about me?"

She tilted her head at him, curious. He was definitely not human -- he didn't smell.

At all. "Why don't you smell like anything?"

A little ways down the beach, there's a green turtle-shell zooming back and forth.

Rumor has it he goes around seven miles an hour...but he can stop on a dime.

Cameron considers things for a few moments and then opts to slide to her feet and walk over to the spot where the turtle is zooming, still barefoot.

Then she sits down again and continues to observe.

After a few minutes, the shell comes to an abrupt stop almost directly in front of her, and Koops flops out onto his stomach.

"Man...I've gotta start doing this more often." He hasn't noticed her...yet.

Cameron glances down at him with a blink.

"You are out of shape?" Yeah, she's still taking in the fact that he's a talking turtle.
