David was sitting on the sofa waiting for Nick to finish getting ready. They were going over to Jacqui’s for their monthly get together. Jacqui and Catherine had come up with the idea. They thought it would be nice for everybody to spend time together outside of work. Personally, he’d never seen the need for it when they all saw each other almost everyday. Every month a different person would host it. Some people grumbled, mostly David, but in the end they went along with it. This month was Jacqui’s turn again. David sighed.  The woman was his best friend but he hated her apartment. It was small, especially with ten people in it. There was barely room to move.

David leaned his head back trying to see into the bedroom. “Are you done yet? You know, Jacqui hates it when people arrive late?”

“I’m almost ready.” Nick called from the bathroom.

David smiled as he thought about the first time they went to Jacqui’s. She had begged David to come early and help her. He arrived two hours early and was surprised when Nick answered the door. Apparently, Jacqui had begged Nick to help too. She loved to play matchmaker and had been trying to get the two men together for months. It didn’t seem to matter to her that everyone thought Nick was straight.  David spent the next few hours thinking of ways to kill the woman without getting caught.

Funny thing was as the night wore on David noticed the Texan was always sitting or standing near him. A couple days after that Nick asked him out for breakfast. Then it was movies, concerts, dinners and more breakfasts. Neither man really knew when it had turned into more then friendship. But it had and David thanked God for that everyday.

“David?”

“Huh?”

“You didn’t hear a word I said, did you?” Nick frowned.

“Is that what you are wearing?” David ignored the man’s question.

Nick rolled his eyes. “Why do I put up with you?”

“It’s the sex.”

“You think you’re that good, huh?”

“I know I’m that good.”  David smirked.

“Oh, please.”

“I remember you saying that last night.”

“You are so stuck on yourself.”

“Somebody’s got to love me.” David said it jokingly but Nick saw a brief sadness cross his lover’s face.

“I love you, David.” Nick said as he sat down beside him.

David smiled. “I know and I love you too.”

Nick leaned against him.  “Am I that good?”

David pretended to consider the question. “You’ll do.” he finally said.

Nick raised up and punched the man on the shoulder. “I ought to make you sleep on the couch just for that.”

“But you won’t.”

Nick sighed as David leaned over and started kissing him. “What about Jacqui?” he muttered as David started pulling at his shirt.

“How would I know how good she is?” David shuddered at the thought.

“You know very well that’s not what I meant. We’ll be late.”

“I don’t care. Tell her I jumped you, if you want.”

“And I couldn’t say no cause you’re just that good.” Nick said breathlessly.

*******

“Aren’t you going to ring the bell?” David asked.

“Hey, you are the one that made us late. Nick answered. Besides she is your best friend.”

“Chicken.”

“I didn’t make you come by yourself, did I?”

“That would have really pissed her off.” David said as the door suddenly flew open.

“It’s about time you got here. Jacqui was starting to worry.” Sara grinned.

The men exchanged looks. Jacqui worried? No, more like angry, furious or pissed. Whatever they were screwed.

“Where have you been?” Jacqui glared as they entered the small room. “Everyone is starving.”

“Uh Dave, does that mean they’re planning on eating us?”

Jacqui gave Nick an ‘I can kill one of you and make it look like the other one did it’ look.

“It’s David’s fault we’re late.” Nick caved under the look. “He jumped me.”

David stared at the man as everybody else in the room laughed.

“What?  Nick shrugged. You said I could tell her.”

“You’re right I did.” David smirked and Nick knew he was in trouble. “As I recall you said I was too good to say no to.”

“Whoa guys. Too much information.” Archie said.

“You’re just jealous.” David replied.

********

Because the apartment was small and overcrowded David was practically sitting on Nick’s lap. Not that he was complaining, not much anyway, being close to Nick was David’s favorite place to be. They had both been through hell, separately and together, over the years but they had survived and became stronger. Little did David know their strength was about to be tested once again.
