David stood in the doorway of the kitchen, smiling. Nick was standing over the stove in nothing but his boxers, the ones with cowboys all over them. David had bought them as a joke but the Texan proclaimed they were his favorite ones. Sometimes David just didn’t get the man.
“Didn’t anyone ever tell you it’s not polite to stare?” Nick asked.
“No one has ever accused me of being polite.”
“Well, that’s true.” Nick laughed.
“Besides you look too damn sexy for me not to stare.”
Nick finally turned and looked at the other man. “You don’t look so bad yourself.”
“Thanks.” David kissed him. “I think.”
“Morning, baby.”
“What are you cooking? It smells heavenly.”
“Eggs, bacon, biscuits, gravy and fried potatoes.”
“Are you trying to clog my arteries or just make me fat?”
“I figured we could use a big breakfast this morning. My mom and sisters used to fix this every Saturday when I was growing up.”
“We are going to have to make you an appointment with a cardiologist then.”
Nick rolled his eyes and went back to his cooking.
*******
Breakfast was over and they were on the porch, swinging. The swing had been the main selling point for Nick when they were house hunting. David is convinced that the man wouldn’t have cared if the house was falling down as long as it had a porch swing, he was buying it. Luckily, David had loved the inside of the house as much as Nick loved the swing.
Nick’s cell phone ring and they both made a face, figuring he was being called into work early. “Stokes”
“Um, hi. This is Mary Hodges, David’s sister. I’m sorry to bother you but Davey gave me your number in case of emergency. I’ve been trying his cell but can’t reach him.” She sounded really nervous.
“No problem, Mary.” Nick studied David face. “He’s right here, hang on.” David started to take the phone but Nick held on to it. “Promise not to throw it?”
“Funny. Now give.”
Nick handed him the phone and started to go in the house, thinking he might want some privacy but David grabbed his arm and motioned for him to stay.
“Hello Mary.”
“Hi Davey. Sorry to call Nick but when I couldn’t get you on your cell I got worried.” she apologized.
“It’s ok. I broke my phone last night.”
She didn’t have to ask how. She knew her brother well enough to know he probably threw it. “Look Davey, I owe you an apology. I should have never asked you to come and see Brenda. You must think I’m a heartless bitch.”
“Of course, I don’t think that. You’re going though a tough time, that’s all.”
“I miss you, Davey.”
“I miss you too. Why don’t you come and stay with us sometimes? We have an extra bedroom.”
“Really? You’re serious?” Mary was surprised.
“Yes, I am. It’s been too long, Mary.”
“Yeah it has and I’d love…”
“Mary?”
“Shit” Mary said under her breath.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing I gotta go.” she hurriedly said. But not before David heard a familiar voice in the background.
“Mary, wait. Is that Johnny?” David felt a chill go through him.
Silence
“Answer me, dammit!” David shouted.
“It’s him.” she whispered. “He just got here.”
“Where are you?”
“I’m at the house.”
“Mary, listen to me. You need to get the hell out of there.”
“I can’t. I promised her I’d stay.”
David was having a hard time keeping the anger out of his voice. “You don’t owe her anything. Please, you have to get away from Johnny.”
“I’ll be alright. I got to go. I love you.”
“Mary! David yelled as he heard her hang up. “Damn!”
Nick grabbed his phone before David had a chance to throw it.
“If Johnny’s there then Teddy won’t be far behind. Why does that girl think she has to stay?” David said more to himself then Nick.
Nick frowned. “You’re going, aren’t you?”
“I’ve got too. She’s not safe there by herself.” David sighed.
“I’m going with you then.”
“No, you can’t.” David panicked.
“Why not?”
“Brenda can’t know about you. She’ll kill you like she did him.” David shuddered at the thought.
“David, she’s dying. I seriously doubt she could hurt me.”
“There’s Johnny and Teddy. They will if she can’t.” David was shaking.
“Calm down, David. I can take care of myself. There is no way I’m letting you go through this alone. I am going even if I have to follow you. Understand?”
David nodded. He was terrified of Nick getting hurt but he also knew he needed the man with him. “I don’t know if I’m strong enough for this.”
“Are you kidding me? You’re the strongest person I know.” Nick smiled as he put his arms around David.
David held Nick tightly. “Promise me you’ll be careful. I don’t know what I’d do if they hurt you.”
“I will.” Nick promised.
