I love fresh peaches, but I don't have any inkling of how to buy them; I've been told to wait until the ones in the store are mildly fragrant. In the middle of the past week, as I walked through my grocery store, I caught a wafting whiff of pleasant, springy odor. I added one peach, a bunch of roast beef, about four calories worth (six pounds) of banana peppers, and a healthy, hearty amount of cheese, topping it off with my spicy dressing, which went surprisingly well with each other, the sweet and the bitter and the piquant.

Ahhh, fresh peaches. Nothing quite like them, IMHO. One year, when I was living in the Slocan Valley, being back to the earth girl, I picked 40 pounds of peaches from a local orchard. I canned them all, and had fresh tasting peaches throughout the winter. They tasted fabulous in the middle of January.
I also make a killer peach chutney. yum, haven't done that for years.

Peach chutney sounds good, but I was able to eat all five pounds before they spoiled without having to resort to technology.

Five pounds of peaches? Bake a pie or something!

I buy two lbs of clementines at a time. That's plenty for one person.

Ripe peaches are a mess anyway. I like them a little on the crunchy side, but peeling them still is a chore. I switched to nectarines long ago. ;o)

Peeling them? Now, why would you want to do that?? And the mess is part of the fun!

I had my 1st 2 peaches of the year in the last few days (in fact, I was thinking of posting about them--them & the mangos!), since they finally got down to a reasonable price. They were good, but not at their peak yet. I usually only buy 2 or 3 at a time, because if I get more, I won't finish them before they're too far gone.

My brother liked to eat peaches fuzz-and-all when he was a teen, so I did it for awhile, too. He did it longer, but we each decided independently that it was way too much roughage and quit, me before I was out of high school, he shortly after college.

I've got a nice produce store not too far away. I usually buy hand-sized fruit four or five pieces at a time, but occasionally more if I know it will keep till I can eat it all.

Fun is fun, and some messes are fun. But, I can't stand having sticky hands! I tell myself peaches are too sweet. Didn't Aesop have a fable about sweet grapes? ;o)

I had a few bad experiences with peaches in the north. They are never like South Carolina peaches. About this time of the year, we'd go visit my grandparents near Pageland SC. (They did live on the NC side of the border). We'd buy a bushel of peaches. Mom would freeze the peaches--basically peel the peaches and put them in syrup and put them in the freezer. My favorite treat would be to get a pint of frozen peaches and eat them frozen. The peach saturated syrup would pool in the top of the freezer container. It was like heaven. My next favorite thing was homemade peach ice cream.

Hmmmm, I wonder if they grow peaches anywhere near Memphis. On the other hand, I am going to Birmingham next week which is near Georgia.

I was just thinking that the local peaches will be out later this summer.

My family settled a strip of farms around Huron, OH and grew and sold primarily fruit. Peaches were one of them.

Summer, especially late summer, was pretty busy and there were a lot of different recipes, pies kuchens, frozen, which would have come later, canned, chutneys, butters, wines, etc (family recipes I am not much of a cook except for sweets.)

I liked them best fresh. I think that is a childhood carryover. The immediate family was in Rossfood and Cleveland by then, except for us, we drifted between Cincy and Sch'dy depnd on where Dad was assigned. But the big family gathering was in Huron in July and then I used to summer with the Grans.

...in Washington, DC, where I grew up, Gifford's ice cream parlors used to have fresh peach ice cream every April. With actual little shreds of peach flesh in it! Mmmmm...thanks for reviving that memory!
