A scene from last night's line at Barnes and Noble

I had reserved my copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on Monday, after some minor panic that it was being released on Tuesday and the realization that the closer Border's had raised the reserved price to only 30 percent off, but I hadn't thought until reading my friend's list that I'd still need to get there early to pick up a wristband ( Read more... )

That's too funny. hankat July 17 2005, 03:13:48 UTC
So much for being a good samaritan. At least no one turned you into the authorities.

My Harry Potter experience...it was may friend and I walking through town (stopped for an expresso flake ice cream cone), wandered into the local drug store and there it was, a lonely stack of Harry Potter books. No line ups, no wrist bands, no fan fare. Best of all, it was about 30% off.

The fan fare (no pun intended) was half the fun!

Well, not really, as I pretty much avoided all of it. The upscale strip shopping mall wherein rests the Barnes and Noble had transformed into a carnival for the sale. There were stilt walkers and lemonade stands and live music and rides in the Cleveland Rocket.

And I got about 46% off, and I'd finished it before you got up this morning!

Thank you. To be fair, though, number seventy-four had no idea that I'd handed the kid the calendar.

And also to be fair, it's not that the kid wasn't appreciative, it's that he was a moron.

Yes, it was PERFECLY CLEAR that "he was a moron" - still, don't let it disuade you!

I once had the best conversation with an eleven year old ever in a line for Lemony Snicket signing. Funny, articulate, polite, with a really great take on books and the world in general. Come to think of it she would fit my image for Hermione except, fortunately for her, very different hair. Her father turned out to be the playwright Michael Healey so maybe it was genetics. Or maybe the Lemony Snicket crowd is intrinsically cooler.
