Let's say, hypothetically, that I were to spend about seven days, six nights in New Zealand in late October. Where should I go? I've been around the Auckland/Rotorua area already but have never been on the South Island.

The South West, Mount Cook and the Fjords, is nice if you like scenery. The Marlborough area is good if you like winery tours. In my experience, Christchurch aside, the South Island is much less sophisticated than the North so don't expect much except rusticity!

Thank you for the advice. I'm leaning towards trying to spend a few days at Mt. Cook and then Milford Sound. Though I consider all the New Zealanders I know quite sophisticated, I must say that if I wanted urbanity, I don't know that New Zealand would be my first choice!

I say hooray to that! Too bad you're not coming may way though (Auckland) :-S Honestly, I have only been to the South Island a couple of times and probably know Australia better...

If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, you should get yourself a copy of the LotR Location Guidebook when you get to NZ, though I think some of the locations are a bit hard to get to normally, there are some tours you can take for lots of $$$.

Well, I'm definitely coming through Auckland (it's my port of entry and exit), I just don't want to spend all week there. In fact, I'm completely clueless as to what I would do in Auckland, but I might spend two or three nights in the city towards the end of my sojourn.

I wouldn't mind visiting the LotR locations, but since my main interest would be trying the diverse ethnic restaurants I'm sure they have in a big border city like Minas Tirith, as well as what I'm sure is Edoras's wonderful local cheese, I'd probably be quite disappointed!

I know a lovely hobbit couple who live in Matamata (sorry...Hobbiton ^_^) who could put you upfor a few nights. Just be sure to mind your head and not step on any of their 13 children.

Hmmmm I think I have exams in late October...

Well, I will be in Auckland for forty-eight hours after all. But it's from a Monday evening until Wednesday afternoon, so it probably won't be convenient to your studying.

I've always wanted to do Milford. I've suggested Mt. Cook and Milford (and it sounds like d'H is taking it seriously).

What was that? I seem like a glacial lover? dherblay September 16 2004, 10:16:32 UTC
I guess that's fair.

I do like the whitewater rafting, so taking your advice into account, I booked an Air New Zealand flight to Queenstown. I also understand that it's not incredibly hard to drive from there to either Mount Cook or Milford Sound, which is my plan. Should these not meet my fancies, I'll look into your other suggestions.

I'm sorry that I won't be getting to Wellington, though. I guess I'll have to save that for future trips!

On the contrary....you are positively volcanic! nzraya September 16 2004, 13:30:37 UTC
....whatever that means.

*drowns in metaphor*

Queenstown is kind of in the middle of everything cool in the South Island, and it won't be high season, which is a blessing. And let's face it, the whole South Island is only, like, 1000K long or something. I mean, it's about a 15-hour drive from one end to the other. So if you're not totally enamoured of where you find yourself, it won't take you that long to get to something you do like.
