Lyric puzzles

Jun 29, 2004 21:52

Ever since the meme went around in May, I've regretted not putting up a bunch of lyrics from unidentified songs which readers could then guess. It's fair to say that this has gnawed at my heart. I enjoyed, despite my poor showing, the guessing games posted by lynnmonster and Chad Orzel, but I think my favorite set had to be the one by tahnan. Instead of ( Read more... )

The other puzzles I don't much care about; it will break my heart if no one does the acrostic.

Look, I did the rebus, because it was in bright colors: Family Affair , by Steve Winwood

I'm pretending to be working now, though, so I should go back to that.

I busted number 1 faster than I could get onto the site last night. But, lyrics? No chance, I'll figure out the song for any of them!

I love anacrosstics, but don't have much hope I'll solve yours. I'm trying, though.

Hmmm, that's troubling, as because I've never built an acrostic before, I'm not sure how fair it is. I had hoped that it would be reasonably solvable (I'm not out to screw anyone), but the really obvious answers are probably too few and too short to give anyone a toehold.

It would probably have been better had I given A. a more general definition.

About noon I sat down and worked out the acrostic. You did a fine job. The clues were much better than I usually see in magazines, without being pushovers. As usual I had to do most of the work by guessing the target rather than the clues, but I didn't cheat even a little bit. (Okay, I had to look up the spelling of one of the answers to the clues, but I did know the word.)

Making one of those up has to be a lot more challenging than solving one, and I've seen too many that I couldn't solve short of peeking at bits of the answer, because the clues were awful or just too obscure.

Good job, d'Herb!

It gladdens me greatly to hear that. I'm always a little disappointed when The New York Times runs an acrostic as its second Sunday puzzle instead of a diagramless or a cryptic, but having written this, I have new respect for the legacy of Thomas H. Middleton.

Look, it's very naughty of you to post such tempting distractions while some of us are trying to learn. If you do it again, you'll have to go sit in the corner.

1) The Dave Clark Five, "Do You Love Me (now that I can dance)?" "You broke my heart/'cause I couldn't dance/you didn't even want me around/but now I'm back to let you know/I can really shake it down."

9) Steve Winwood, "It's a Family Affair" "You can't leave me 'cause your heart is there"

Still working on the others.

The songs are correct! The artists though are respectively the Contours and Sly & the Family Stone, not that there's anyway to tell that from any information I actually bothered to include, so it's really unfair of me to expect people to correctly guess from the many artists to cover the songs. I'm now deathly afraid that people will say that no. 7 is by Duran Duran.
