Glad to hear you came through it ok! Happy to hear it spurred what sounds like a really positive conversation.
For me the main difference with age is that I feel I have a little more to lose if my job were to suddenly disappear. There was a time it didn't worry me all that much - pre-mortgage, and pre this crappy economy. But at the same time, after living through so many layoffs in the .com industry, I feel like I've learned not to worry about it much. I figure I'll deal with it if it hits me, but worrying just wastes my time and my energy, so I try to minimize that as much as possible.
