I can't say H/C is a trope I seek out, specifically, whetehr in reading or in writing. I end up with a lot though, because the c part is a nice way to show friendship and the h part is often a consequence of conflict.

The list of possible prompts for trope bingo is about half AUs, so it must be a common definition.
I hadn't thought of it in terms of plus or instead-of canon, but I do find it to be a useful distinction! I also tend to prefer the kind that add something to canon rather than swapping it out wholesale.

I think there's overlap, but I'm not sure they're entirely the same. All AUs are tropes, but not all tropes are AUs? Idk.
It's good if this a distinction people find useful!
