sapphiretragedy posted something in her journal about Snape actually being the hero of the books because without him, none of it would have happened

Excellent point! Yes, if Severus hadn't begged Voldemort for Lily's life, she wouldn't have had a choice, and her sacrifice wouldn't have saved Harry. It sheds a new and very interesting light on the story. Thank you!
I've seen the arguement that Snape is the Hero of the stories before, but not because he was the lynchpin of LIly's ability to choose (which is a very interesting and compelling theory BTW). THe arguement I've seen is that Snape is the Hero because his the one making difficult moral choices and constantly fighting temptations whereas Harry pretty much does what he thinks needs to be done, no (or few) questions asked.
I agree with both. ALthough I do like Harry, Snape is the one sacrificing years of his life to spy with almost no appreciation or recognition. Dumbledore treats him like a puppet (but then again he seems to treat everyone that way). Harry was handed his destiny while Snape chose his.
It is actually not Lily's love for Harry that protects him, it is Snape's love for Lily; because without that Lily would have never been given a choice.
Thank you for pointing this out, although I think that seeing it this way it's actually Lily and Severus' love combined. :) I like this idea.
Maybe Dumbledore himself thought Voldemort would see him as the likely choice, and therefore suggested they chose somebody else.
No, DD clearly stated that it was Potters' choice to refuse his offer and chose Sirius/ switching to Peter at the last moment.
I don't understand why JKR says that because Snape wasn't ideal he cannot be a hero. :/

Now that you mention it, I seem to remember that. *sigh* Time for a re-read, I guess. IN that case, maybe the idea somebody else had is true, that Lily found out too much about Dumbledore's backstory from Bathilda to trust him.

You're welcome.
Though the point has probably been made before. I don't think I can credit myself for bringing it up.
