More applied than academic and arguably of declining value because of the number in the market. Unless you are at a top ten school the signaling value is not what it used to be.

True on both accounts, but Simon's #33 in the world, so it's value is still pretty high (especially if you get free tuition). More importantly, for the area I'm going for -- finance, accounting, and economics -- Simon is ranked #4 for finance & econ by LondonTimes, and #12 and #17 for finance and accounting by US News & World Report. I think particular program ratings are more important than the overall school ranking. Take a look at the "criteria" for ranking business schools overall. You'll find things included such as the "% women faculty", "% women students", "% minorities", and other humbug that says nothing one way or another about how good a school is.

Regarding being more applied than academic, I've always been interested in investing and financial advising, and it goes very well with economics. Also, spending 5-7 years in grad school, being paid 20k a year, and having to waste time learning bullshit mainstream economics isn't very high on my value-scales.

Mainstream humbug? Be happy that you don't study in Germany. ^.^ Most of the universities here are clearly Keynesian and pretty maths oriented. *sighs* Well, I'm going to study philosophy and psychology anyways.
