Title: Joy To The World
Rating: T
Status: Part 1 of 2
Characters: Team Tiedoll, Black Order in general
Notes: I know Christmas is still several months away, but what the heck. This crack idea spawned from an idle thought during a boring lit class. I've always had the impression that Team Tiedoll is the most artistic of all the Exorcist teams. So why not exploit the thought? :D

Kanda frowned as he sat by the windowsill, frowned up at the light flecks of white that had been continuously falling from the steely grey sky. It was December in France, and they were still in HQ instead of elsewhere, and frankly, Kanda hated spending Christmases in HQ.

The door creaked and the raven-haired Exorcist turned his head to see Marie enter the room and close the door gently behind him. For such a big man Noise Marie could be very gentle.

“Have you been practicing?” Marie asked, sitting beside Kanda. “We only got a week.”

“We can’t do it.” Kanda said with a snort. “I don’t think that Chinese lump can do it.”

“Give him a chance, Kanda.” Marie said mildly, patting his knee with a huge hand. “I hear master’s going to give him a crash course.”

“A crash course?” Kanda laughed. Somewhere in his mind, Marie had an inkling that if the others were to see Kanda laughing like this, they’d have jumped off the nearest cliff they could find while shouting, AKUMA. “To hell with the crash course. That lump can’t do what Daisya does, and you know it.”

Marie sighed. The Japanese had always been the pessimist in the team despite the fact that he had a very gorgeous singing voice. There was a slight rustling as Kanda stood up and picked up a Stradivarius violin from the nearby table.

“The hell are you waiting for, Marie? Come on.” He said, sweeping his hair over a shoulder and then putting the instrument to his neck. Marie shrugged and rose.

Chaoji Han sat nervously inside Froi Tiedoll’s office. To ease the tension he had been feeling for the past four minutes that he had been waiting, the Exorcist trainee decided to just look around. Like all quarters and offices, Tiedoll’s own was no different. There was a striking absence of creature comforts, and the pieces of furniture were all plain. Perhaps the only luxury in the small room was the big, squashy office chair behind the desk.

I wonder why a General can’t have better accommodations.

Books were neatly tucked into their shelves behind the desk, and folders were neatly piled on the out-tray. There were several picture frames on the desk, and swallowing, Chaoji dared to pick up one.

The picture showed a younger, clean-shaven Froi Tiedoll with two children - Chaoji immediately recognized Marie what with the girth and height, but he had to blink twice at the dark-haired…girl? in the picture. He’d stared for a good five minutes before recognizing that sharp look about the girl-no, boy’s eyes. Chaoji quickly put the picture frame down and uttered a quick prayer to the gods to forgive his blasphemous thoughts. The temptation to look over his shoulder and see if Kanda was there was very strong.

“Ah? Did you wait long?”

The Chinese trainee looked up with relief into Froi Tiedoll’s smiling face. The smile quickly faded when Chaoji noticed the limp in the general’s steps.

“Hmm?” Tiedoll smiled as he lowered himself into the squashy chair with a pleased grunt. “The limp? No worries about that, it’s just that I tried to take Yuu-kun by surprise and I found out that he is faster than me now.”

Chaoji only nodded. He remembered how Marie and Kanda had come to their aid back in Edo - remembered the flawless cooperation and teamwork the two displayed when they took on one giant Akuma by themselves and brought it down where Lavi, Krory and Bookman failed. How ever could he hope to fit in?

“Now…” Tiedoll said, disturbing Chaoji’s train of thought. The general was scratching his head, making his bushy hair wobble oddly. “I know this might come as a surprise, but…can you sing?”

Eh? Chaoji blinked. “Sing, general?”

“Yes. You see, it’s a matter of great importance in my team to have my sons display artistic abilities.”

Ehhh? Chaoji racked his brains desperately and blushed. “I…only sang sailor’s songs, general. You know…chants when we clean Mistress Anita’s ship?”

Tiedoll’s kind face crinkled into a smile. “Well then, sing for me.”

WHA? Chaoji blinked furiously. “Er--.”

“Go on, don’t be shy. Sing for me.”

Again he racked his brains for a song. Chaoji swallowed and parted his lips. The first lines spilled easily from his lips.

“Oh, how merrily I note the albatross,

The albatross, oh, how merrily I note

The sea. Oh, how lovely, how lovely,

Your memory is for me…”

Allen shot Lavi another look as his chopsticks inched nearer toward the Bookman trainee’s plate, toward the unsuspecting piece of ham with Jerry’s special sweet sauce. Another glance up told Allen that Lavi’s head was still turned in the opposite direction.

Chance!

There was a quick flick of movement, and the poor piece of ham was soon grabbed and popped into Allen’s mouth. The white-haired teen chewed with relish and swallowed quickly. But Lavi didn’t mind; he was in fact busy watching the adjacent table, where Marie and Kanda were sitting.

“Oh dear, that’s a nasty cough.” Linali said, voicing Lavi’s exact thoughts. “And we only have two more days before…” she clamped her mouth shut.

Lavi nodded. Mystified, Allen also turned his head and watched the nearby table, where Kanda was hacking softly into his hand now and then as he ate his soba and tempura. Marie kept throwing him anxious glances and whispered things into his ear. Kanda shook his head and glared at the Indian.

“Why?” Allen blinked. “Isn’t it normal to have a cough in a cold weather?” He said, completely missing the point.

Lavi and Linali looked at him as if he had just cracked a really nasty joke about Suman. They didn’t say anything though; Linali resumed with her salad, while Lavi resumed with his watching. Kanda was still coughing.  A few more hacks, and he gave up on his food; he rose and stalked off.

“I hope Madame Hanna has some tonic.” Lavi said as he watched Kanda leave. “I mean. A super effective one that works in two days.”

“Yeah…” Linali said. “It’s not every year that…um…yeah.”

“What is it?” Allen demanded. “It’s not every year that what?”

“Never you mind, bean sprout.” Lavi grinned.

“The name is Allen!”

“Look, you can have my lunch.” Lavi said, rising and pushing his plate toward Allen. “I better see if the old man has some herbs that can help. Hmm…”

“I hope he does!” Linali called after the red-head.

Allen turned to Linali. “What’s happening? Why is everyone concerned with Kanda having a cough? Does he…” Grey eyes widened. “He doesn’t have consumption, does he!?” Allen burst out.

Linali opened her mouth for some seconds and then laughed. “Of course not!”

“Then what is it? Why the sudden concern---!”

“Look, Allen, here, have my lunch too, I might ask Reever and Johnny---!” Linali ran off without wasting another second, leaving Allen alone and clueless at the table.

Huh. What the hell is going on?

One more day to go. I’m so nervous…

It turned out that Chaoji could sing decently after all and would not need the crash course. He was in Tiedoll’s office again that morning after eating a hasty breakfast. The door creaked and Chaoji jumped; he turned his head to see Marie and Kanda enter. He quickly rose and bowed to his teammates; Marie acknowledged him with a kind smile while Kanda plainly ignored him. Chaoji didn’t miss the violin case that Kanda carried, though.

Does he play?

Marie sat down on the other chair across Chaoji’s, while Kanda remained standing. A few more minutes and General Tiedoll arrived. He beamed to see all of them present.

“Ah, we’re all here - very good, very good. Yuu-kun, how’s the voice?”

Kanda only gave a half-hearted thumb up before opening his violin case and taking out the instrument.

“Yes yes, just play for now, Yuu-kun. We can’t risk your voice - I’m sure…right.” The general said, and handed a piece of paper to Chaoji. The Chinese gawked at the printed words.

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.
