[What's that heavenly smell? It's your favorite food in the whole world, and it's coming from just beyond that doorway. In fact, there's a feast laid out. Surely it can't hurt to find that one thing ( Read more... )

[Bookman as a plethora of badges, ranging anywhere from "Horror Hall Survivor" to "Frequent Subject of Bad Fanfiction" to "Questionable Loyalties" to "Makes an Interesting Shark and/or Giraffe". He is unamused, and not even grilled meat makes it only slightly better.]

Sure, because we've deemed the rest of the world incapable of handling it. But who're we to say that?

If you don't know the answer to that question, tell everyone everything you know. You'll find that answer soon enough.

It's still bias.

So you want to keep it completely pure. And how do you intend to do that?

To be honest I don't care about keeping it "pure". I just want to see you think on your own for once, if that's even possible.

Throwing me out of the nest already. How cruel, Bookman.

Quips aren't thinking, apprentice. Get on it.

If a human is recording the history, it will have bias regardless if we share it, don't share it, or work hard to be objective. You want no bias. Build a robot army of Bookmen.

Isn't that what we're already supposed to be?

Ideally, yes. But it's not possible to factor out human bias and emotions completely no matter how good of a Bookman you are.

Then why bother?

Because this is how my life is supposed to be played out.

Because that's what you were told. Yeah, I know. Do you have another answer beyond that, or are you just going to keep spitting up clan mantra?

I want to be a Bookman. It gives my life purpose, something that I can concentrate my efforts on. Something that I know with enough training I will be good at.

I don't want the rest of my life wasted in meaningless human interactions. The majority of the population thinks that they're noble and kind, but the truth is they would sell out everyone else if it served their own purposes. I want to watch and record and analyze why certain people are on top and what it takes to tear them down. On how many times people will make the same foolish mistakes over and over again.

And when one country is razed to the ground, I'll pick up my parchment and pen and moved to the next one. And the next one after that. And I will continue to watch and record because that's what I do. And I'll continue doing it until I hand the reins over to someone else.

[Bookman pauses, because that's what he'd felt himself. What he still feels. Only now-]

What if watching isn't enough?
