There's the pitter-patter of tiny feet in huge combat boots as a Chinese girl of about twelve walks quickly into the room, both hands stuffed into her pockets and back slouching slightly. She straightens up immediately when she notices her new surroundings, although nothing about her indicates fear or confusion, only slight surprise and sharp

Overhearing, as he walks by, some rock guide or another tucked under his arm. "It's the mansion."

"Mansion? That's kind of an uncreative name, ain't it?" She points to the guide curiously. "What's that?"

[hades_nerd]

"Just about as uncreative as 'earth', 'the sun', and 'the moon'." He pulls his book out. "It's a rock and mineral guide."

[yuelian]

"But don't it have an actual name? Most places that feel like home should. And why do y'need a guide to rocks and minerals? Can't you just point at one and go 'that's a rock' and 'that's a mineral' for another?"

*hark, is that a familiar voice we hear?* Mei-mei? *it is!* Amber! What are you doing here? Do Mom and Dad know you're away?

Jie-jie! *goes to hug her because yes, we adore our sister ^___^* Wo bu zhi dao! I just got here! But what about you? How long've you been here? What's it like? Are the people nice?

*well, so do we, so have an everlasting hug* I came here from the training house. Everyone I've met has been very nice. *raises eyebrows, lowers her voice* Although a few seem a little too nosy about what it is I'm training for.

Do you think people are missin' us right now? I don't want Mom and Dad to worry. *--but giggles at the last statement* Mostly the boys, right?

*this is a Catrin fiddling with some form of electronics that she probably isn't supposed to have but, oh, she recognizes that voice. and that grammar. so this would be a grin* Well, now, there's a familiar face if I ever saw one.

Catrin! *pretty much bounces over with a grin* You're here too? What are you doing?

I'm here when I'm not anywhere else. It keeps me out of trouble. *as if she could ever really stay out of trouble* Anyway, I'm trying to fix a hover unit equalizer. Baba says I can get behind the controls of a craft again when I can build one for myself.

Ooh. I wish I could learn how to pilot a ship. Can I help you? Or, even better -- *points to the stereo* -- Do you know what that is? Do y'think they'd miss it if I took it apart to see how it works an' then put it back together again?

She smiles, a nice and friendly smile, if slightly goofy. "Hey there. Was that Chinese there? And what's Serenity?"

"Shi de*!" She beams, the response obvious even though it's in Chinese. "I'm Chinese, but my parents adopted me. And Serenity is a ship, of course. A spaceship!"

*It is!

"A spaceship? Wow!" She grins, used to kids' overactive imaginations. "That sounds awesome."

"Nah, it really ain't as grand as most people think it is. Especially when the Cap'n's yellin' at everyone and when it breaks down again, but I still love it. Where do you usually live? Is it a spaceship too? Or is it on one of the planets?"
