Midnight Movies, Jazz Standards, and WIFEY.

The bad news is, '9 to 5' played at the midnight movies in Dallas a couple weeks ago and I MISSED IT. This would have been the perfect kick-off for the 9 to 5 slumber party I've always wanted to host. Even if logic tells me that most Dallas types are too stuffy for such madcap adventures in high fashion, I like to imagine that the audience was a ( Read more... )

Forged autographs on Ebay? Say it ain't so! I just got in a huge bidding war with a bunch of Japanese record collectors over an autographed Tokyo Happy Coats LP, and I won, so now I'm paying an obscene amount of money for it. Yesterday was payday, at least, but DANG.

Please post a review of the Carol Channing CD when it arrives!

Wifey looks hilarious (uh, not the assassination of the president stuff, but that first excerpt). I've GOT to read it. I wish I could recommend some titles to you, but I've been a real lazybones about reading real live books lately--lately it's all comics and magazines for me.

It seems to be a sign of the times that so many autographs sold on Ebay are fakes. But don't worry -- I can't imagine that anyone would think to dupe the autographs of the Tokyo Happy Coats! Maybe nobody would forge Carol Channing's signature, either, but I'm not putting too much hope in this, just in case.

Also, after reading Wifey, you will never think of middle-aged men riding motorcycles the same way again. (The Desperate Living motorcycle cop is an excellent comparison!)

I hope your Carol Channing autograph is as authentic as Eiko, Shoko, Keiko, Tomiko, and Ruriko's are.

If they ever make a movie of WIFEY (I can't imagine why they would, but if they DID), they need to use "You Will Never Think of Middle-Aged Men Riding Motorcycles the Same Way Again" as a tagline on the posters.

Ooh! J'adore your new icon. So full of surprises!

I've heard snippets of the Jazz Baby album -- it used to be available for MP3 download (if you can believe it!) but I never trusted that for some reason; I wanted the real deal. Still, I listened to the 30 sec clips.

Just imagine Carol belting out, "IF you WANT my COMPANY! YOU can't FIFTY-FIFTY ME! You gotta KISS mama EVERY NIGHT! or she won't be home when you ca-a-allll."

I forgot to mention two things:

1. I love your Millie icon.

2. When I read that first excerpt from WIFEY about the guy with the motorcycle helment, I thought of the perverted motorcycle cop in Desperate Living: "that was real SOUL KISS!"

Wifey is such a fine book. The idea about developing a taste for "a trip to Rio" (look, I just finished Bergdorf Blondes, please forgive me) like you do with lobster still pops into my head once in a while.

haha... a trip to Rio. Everybody's doing it these days!

I especially like how Sandy Pressman's five-year-old daughter speaks like a drunken sailor. And don't you think she captured the general vibe of life in a 1970s suburb perfectly? I don't know if she ever mentions the location of Plainfield/Watchung, but I'm picturing suburban California. Like... Downey, hometown of the Carpenters.

Sadly, Plainfield and Watchung are located in New Jersey.

Oh, you will be living out one of my dreams next weekend by seeing What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? on the big screen! I've always wanted to as well as to star in a remake with Me as Blanche, Charles Busch as Jane, Regina King as Elvira and James Gandolfini as Edwin, filmed in glorious black and white of course.

I have not been reading much *fiction* these days but if you are in the mood may I suggest Midnight at The Palace: My Life as a Fabulous Cockette by Pam Tent. It is to diiiie for.

HAHA! How uncanny -- I just wrote to Phyllis the other day that I would love to read 'Midnight at the Palace...' by Pam Tent! You've seen the documentary of the Cockettes, right? It's wonderful. I find it hard to believe that so much documentation exists -- thank goodness someone was sober enough to film so much footage.

I will think of you when I catch the movie! Have you ever heard Bette Davis's proposed theme song for the film? I have the 45 and can burn it to a disc for you if you'd like to hear it. (I could probably even email it -- not sure, never tried, but it might work.)

Yes, I have the fantabulous Cockettes documentary on tape and have watched it many times. "Sweet" Pam's book is just divoone and it's a hoot getting all the inside dish on Hibiscus, Sylvester, Goldie Glitters, Srumbly and the whole gang. I agree that it is a miracle that there is so much filmed documentation on The Cockettes as for the few years they were together as a performing troupe LSD ruled!

Thanks for the offer to e-mail a copy of Miss D's "Jane" song (if it's no trouble, of course). My e-mail is: dorothykfan@yahoo.ca

Oh, love the '70's friends of Barbie icon!

"Jane" song coming right up. Little warning: it will probably be a huge file and I'm not sure if this will work... but it's worth a try.

Debbie Burton sings the first half, then Bette comes in near the end: "HERE'S what happened to Baby Jane!" It's a song you can twist to.

I'm crazy about your new icon, too!

Hi! Thanks for those amazing pictures, and for adding me back.

You write funny, witty things on Anna Claire's LJ, so I took a look at yours, and lo-and-behold -- clever, charming and witty! I'm glad you're on my friends list now. I like your flow.

Let me just say that you've got a wacky knack for timing. It's funny, I had checked out your userinfo only a couple of days before you added me and thought to myself that we should be friends. As always, though, I was too shy to make the first move -- so thank you for being a bold soul sister!

I dig your happening!
