What I'm Watching: Eastwick

So when I first heard about Fall 2009's plate of new shows, I can't say that Eastwick got my attention. The title was familiar, which I later learned was because of the John Updike novel and then the later movie adaptation, neither of which I've read/watched. But as I learned more about it, and heard that it was one of the better pilots out there ( Read more... )

My interest kind of piqued when I saw the previews for the show. Like you, I haven't read the book or seen the original movie. I've always meant too, they're cult classics. Anyways, perhaps I'll check it out. Thanks for the review! :)

It's urban fantasy-esque, and since it doesn't involve vampires, it's worth checking out. Honestly, the show's cute and fun, but I think people need a few episodes before they get hooked. :)

I read the book and saw the movie but was not particularly fond of either. The movie has an awful Hollywood-Epic ending that doesn't fit with the story at all. I've seen one episode of "Eastwick" and so can guess the central mystery about Van Horne, but the producers/writers might have something different planned. The plot of DEXTER certainly diverges from the books, so there's no reason to assume EASTWICK is even trying to follow the book. I don't think Updike's readers are likely to be interested in the show anyway ( ... )

Which episode did you see? Like you, I wasn't too impressed with just one episode, but I warmed up to it. And apparently ABC's happy with it too (though that surprises me, given the ratings), so maybe it'll get a full season. Give the show a few more episodes and let me know what you think! :)

I agree: Romjin is definitely an underrated talent. Though I'm not sure I want them to take the show to LOST or FLASHFORWARD territory: the show's already kind of transparent in its mysteries, you know? LOST was ALWAYS a heap of questions, and I find that FLASHFORWARD is in the middle (with FRINGE somewhere in between).

Yeah, I guess LOST would be the wrong show. I just want them to push the envelope. And I'll definitely watch some more episodes, assuming it stays on the air. I have no desire to watch Jay Leno.
